Meet the Staff from UltraInsights CUP Lab

Meet the Staff

Becky Hays, Manager

Becky Hays Becky Hays has been a certified ultrasound field and lab technician since 1998 and began working at the ISU CUP Lab the same year. At Iowa State University, she interpreted images and scanned research cattle, but her primary role was to work with field technicians, breed associations and breeders to get data ready for submission. She developed a comprehensive knowledge of centralized ultrasound processing and uses this background to work with field technicians to improve their understanding of image quality and paperwork.

In 2002, Becky opened UltraInsights Processing Lab for business. "I am excited to see the growth of UltraInsights over the years and am committed to maintaining the same excellent service our customers are accustomed to. We will remain focused on training our lab technicians, comparing our software with actual carcass data, and cross-checking images regularly to ensure the accuracy of the ultrasound data."

Becky's experience as an interpreting technician has led her to serve as a reference technician for several UGC (Ultrasound Guidelines Council) field certifications and to work with several research projects in which ultrasound data is compared to carcass data.

Becky grew up on a registered Angus farm in southern Iowa. She has an Animal Science degree from Northwest Missouri State University. Becky and her husband Craig have three children and live in Maryville, MO.

Craig L. Hays

Craig HaysCraig L. Hays was introduced to the science of ultrasound in 1990 as a graduate student at Auburn University. Few have had the opportunity to learn ultrasound scanning as thoroughly as he did. He assisted with the collection of carcass ultrasound data on cattle to be harvested and then was able to view the carcasses and compare data. He has served many times as a reference technician for field certification.

In 1998, as one of the first hand-picked CUP field technicians, Craig became manager of the ISU CUP Lab. Craig worked as an image interpreter, assisted in software development and research and has trained many lab and field technicians over the years. Craig developed a high level of excellence in image interpretation, which was validated many times by his correlation with actual carcass measurements.

Craig's role with UltraInsights is to serve as a consultant and advisor. Craig has also developed the UltraInsights Scanning Partner image capturing software to use in the field. "I was lab manager at the ISU CUP Lab and am returning to the lab side of the ultrasound business. At UltraInsights we feel we have the most managerial experience in the industry. We hope to serve the beef cattle industry with the utmost respect for centralized ultrasound processing and data integrity."

Craig is part owner of Critical Insights, a scanning business and, along with Becky and the family, operates a Simmental operation.

Jennifer Sobotka

Jennifer SobotkaJennifer Sobotka joined the team in 2006. She now serves as office manager and handles much of the day-to-day communication with breeders and technicians. Her attention to detail and great work ethic make her an important asset to keeping things running smoothly and efficiently. "I enjoy working with the staff and learning about the ultrasound technology. Going chute-side to run the computer for scanning really helped to give me a full understanding of what we do."

Jackie Meier

Jackie CarlsonJackie joined UltraInsights in 2012 as a spring intern and has remained on the team since.  She is a certified field technician and has proven to be very capable in all aspects of beef cattle ultrasound.  Jackie graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 2012.
